Overview: What is acupuncture and how it works

When asked how acupuncture works, the best way for me to describe it is "homeostasis." You’re body is always looking for its sense of balance. You shiver when you’re cold; you sweat when you’re warm, etc. When one "circuit" or meridian is out of balance, either working too much (excess) or not enough (deficient), over time it will take others out of balance as they try to compensate.

The initial evaluation consists of a verbal screening of all aspects of your health (digestion, sleep, craving, etc) allowing a relatively clear impression to come through as to where the imbalance began. Once this is understood the treatment will steer the root cause of the imbalance back into balance gradually and all the other systems will redirect themselves.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific points of the body in order to prevent and treat disease and improve overall health. It is safe and effective and is often used as a preventative and healing therapy that is free of side-effects.

As acupuncture needles are very fine so they are often imperceptible upon insertion. Unlike hypodermic needles, they are solid not hollow. Receiving acupuncture is not like getting a shot or having your blood drawn. The needles are use are pre-sterilized and disposable. Most are individually packaged and come with individual guide tubes for insertion.

Acupuncture is a treatment modality based on the principals of Chinese medicine dating back 5,000 years. Qi (Chi) and blood flow, Yin/Yang theory, and the meridian systems are the fundamental concepts applied in Chinese medicine.
